The names of selected people were mentioned in the Indira Awas Yojana List. Mostly SC, ST families and freed bonded labourers were included in it. Some non-SC/ST people were also added, but only till 40% of total number. Money for building homes was provided by the government. Houses were built by the poor families with this help.

What is Indira Awas Yojana?
The Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) started in 1985-86 as part of the Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Programme (RLEGP). From April 1989, it was part of the Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (JRY), but in 1996, it became an independent scheme. The main goal of IAY is to help poor people in rural areas by giving them financial support to build houses. The target group includes SC, ST people, freed bonded labourers, and some non-SC/ST families, but only 40% of the total funds can be used for non-SC/ST families.
